چکیده

We discuss the operation principle of a detector based on superheated droplets of Freon-12 and its feasibility for the search of weakly interacting cold dark matter particles. In particular we are interested in a neutralino search experiment in the mass range from 10 to 104 GeV/c2 and with a sensitivity of better than 10−2 events/kg/d. We show that our new proposed detector can be operated at ambient pressure and room temperature in a mode where it is exclusively sensitive to nuclear recoils like those following neutralino interactions, which allows a powerful background discrimination. An additional advantage of this technique is due to the fact that the detection material, Freon-12, is cheap and readily available in large quantities. Moreover we were able to show that piezoelectric transducers allow efficient event localization in large volumes. Corresponding author. Tel. +514 343 6722 Fax. +514 343 6215 E-mail [email protected]

Dark Matter Search with Moderately Superheated Liquids

We suggest the use of moderately superheated liquids in the form of superheated droplet detectors for a new type of neutralino search experiment. The advantage of this method for Dark Matter detection is, that the detector material is cheap, readily available and that it is easily possible to fabricate a large mass detector. Moreover the detector can be made ”background blind”, i.e. exclusively...

First dark matter limits from a large-mass, low-background, superheated droplet detector.

We report on the fabrication aspects and calibration of the first large active mass ( approximately 15 g) modules of SIMPLE, a search for particle dark matter using superheated droplet detectors (SDDs). While still limited by the statistical uncertainty of the small data sample on hand, the first weeks of operation in the new underground laboratory of Rustrel-Pays d'Apt already provide a sensit...

First Results from a Prototype CF3I SIMPLE Dark Matter Search Detector

We report a SIMPLE test experiment based on a prototype CF3I superheated droplet detector with a total exposure of 0.024 kgd. The result, despite the low exposure, is seen to provide restrictions on the allowed phase space of both spinindependent and -dependent interactions which can be compared with those from the significantly larger searches in assessing the potential impact of a full-scale ...

The Potential Impact of a CF3I-based Superheated Droplet Detector in Searches for WIMP Dark Matter

Limits on weakly interacting massive particle dark matter obtainable from a Superheated Droplet Detector loaded with CF3I as active material are estimated on the basis of the radiopurity levels already achieved by the SIMPLE experiment. With 15 kgd exposure, such an experiment may already probe to 10−6 pb in the spinindependent cross section; for the case of spin-dependent WIMPs, the region of ...

Wimp Searches with Superheated Droplet Detectors: Status and Prospects

SIMPLE (Superheated Instrument for Massive ParticLE searches) employs superheated droplet detectors (SDDs) to search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) dark matter. As a result of the intrinsic SDD insensitivity to minimum ionizing particles and high fluorine content of target liquids, competitive WIMP limits were already obtained at the early prototype stage. We comment here on the...
